Chalkstreams are among the rarest habitats on Earth, with 85% of the world’s 260 true chalkstreams located in England. These streams arise where chalk bedrock meets the surface, filtering rainwater into cool, nutrient-rich flows that support high biodiversity — earning them the nickname “England’s rainforests.”

England’s chalk streams, often described as the nation’s "rainforests" for their ecological richness and rarity, are facing a serious and growing threat: untreated sewage.

On 15 June 2023, a major step forward was taken in the fight to save England’s globally rare chalk streams, with the formal launch of the Chalk Stream Strategy Implementation Plan. This marks a significant moment in conservation—a shift from words to action.
