Chalk streams are rare and ecologically important freshwater habitats, with around 260 in the world – over 85% are found in England. Fed by underground chalk aquifers, these streams have a clear, cool, flow that supports rich biodiversity. Often described as "England’s rainforest," chalk streams are under threat from pollution, over-abstraction, and climate change, making their conservation a national and global priority.
